NUTTER RELEASES HIS ETHICS POLICY AMID CHALLENGES TO ETHIC REFORM IN PHILADELPHIA

Philadelphia, February 5, 2007-- Mayoral candidate Michael Nutter, who championed breakthrough ethics reform in City Council, released his Ethics Policy plan today, aimed at continuing the reform efforts he started as a Councilman.

Nutter’s ethics plan could not be timelier, as members of the City Council are currently working to reverse years of progress on reform. Last week, Councilman Kenney introduced a bill to roll back campaign finance limits – an essential part of previous reform efforts – while billing the legislation as a way to “level the playing field.” In a city that has been plagued for decades by government corruption, backing down on ethics send the wrong message.

“Philadelphia badly needs ethics reform and my plan will move this city forward, not backward. Without eliminating ‘pay to play’ and corruption from our city government, this city will be unable to stem its population loss, attract new businesses and keep our brightest young minds within city limits,” Nutter said.

Nutter was a champion of ethics reform as a City Councilman, and he introduced the legislation that created the city’s first independent Ethics Board.

“Adoption of my ethics plan is a vital step to restoring integrity to City Hall and the public’s confidence in its government. Philadelphians want a government they can trust, who will look after the city’s best interest – not their own, said Nutter.
