Outraged local smokers have organized a new group called S.U.A.N (Smokers Unite Against Nutter). The group promises that they will have an Election Day presence in Philadelphia neighborhoods to make sure that Mayoral candidate Michael Nutter is defeated.
"Anyone but Nutter." says Ryan McCozie of Northeast Philadelphia; "He made it impossible for me to enjoy a beer and a smoke."
Members of S.U.A.N have organized via the popular website MySpace.
One angry smoker, Dr. Fear, posted a comment on the page alerting Michael Nutter that "you are a punk, and I would like to challenge you to a fist fight, fair and square. I hope you are at least honorable enough to accept the challenge laid before you…"
The smoking ban, also known as the Clean Indoor Air Worker Protection Law, was proposed in February 2005 and since that time has faced harsh opposition from local bars and restaurants.
Alyssa Leroy, an Old City bartender messaged S.U.A.N to say, "I think it's ludicrous that we can't even smoke in bars. Nutter dealt many of Philadelphia's bars and restaurants a crippling blow with the enactment of the smoking ban. What else would he do to hurt Philadelphia's economy if he were given even more power?"
Smokers Unite Against Nutter promise to hit the streets with their "Anyone But Nutter" message on Election Day, May 15th. The group currently has about 100, but are gaining momentum quickly.
"In addition to our MySpace page, S.U.A.N. members have spread out all over the city with Anti-Nutter literature," says S.U.A.N. founder Tim Moorehouse. "We approach any smoker we see hanging out in front of a bar and explain to them that their exile is directly attributable to Mayoral candidate Michael Nutter."
