HUNDREDS OF CITY CHILDREN JOIN HANDS TO FORM ‘HUMAN CHAIN’ AROUND CITY HALL CALLING ON MAYORAL CANDIDATES TO SUPPORT AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS
WHAT: Children and youth will ‘All Join Hands!’ encircling City Hall, forming a giant human chain, to call on the next Mayor to expand afterschool programs, support youth violence reduction programs and use systems that serve children.
In addition, pies will be given out to the public to symbolize the need for “kids to get a fair piece of the budgetary pie.”
The rally is sponsored by Philadelphia Safe and Sound and the Philadelphia Children’s Commission.
WHO: Philadelphia Mayor John Street, mayoral candidates, other elected officials, Anne Shenberger, President and CEO of PSS, Rev. Wilson Goode Sr., Co-Chair of the Children’s Commission, hundreds of students who attend afterschool programs, teachers and supporters will all participate in the ‘human chain’.

BACKGROUND:
Philadelphia Safe and Sound created the Safe Kids, Sound Futures Campaign for Children and Families in March to educate voters and mayoral candidates on the need for increased afterschool and violence prevention programs and making government accountable for measurable outcomes for kids and families.
Safe Kids, Sound Futures has successfully received some form of commitment from each of the Democratic mayoral candidates since it launched the campaign.
