PHILADELPHIA: Today, Matt McClure, a candidate for City Council in the 4th Councilmanic District, sent a letter to the Philadelphia City Commissioners asking them to investigate whether incumbent Councilwoman Carol Campbell has once again broken campaign finance laws by accepting illegal donations. According to her most recent campaign finance filings, the “Friends of Carol Campbell” PAC received at least four potentially illegal donations. Pennsylvania campaign finance law expressly forbids any and all contributions from any type of corporation or LLC.
Said McClure today, “I understand making a mistake -- we all make them. But what has emerged over the years is a clear pattern of disregard for our campaign finance laws. Obviously Ms. Campbell does not think campaign finance laws apply to her -- and that's yet another reason why we need change on May 15th."
McClure cited four potentially illegal contributions in his letter to the City Commissioners:
C & C Music Industries, LLC
Maximum Properties, LLC
Main Street Munchies, LLC
La Tavola, LLC
In 2001, Ms. Campbell was accepted into an offender rehabilitation program for violating election laws, and last week it was revealed that the Board of Ethics is seeking to levy a fine of $39,000 against the Appreciation Fund, a political action committee which state records indicate she also controls.
“What makes Ms. Campbell's acceptance of potentially illegal contributions even more amazing is that our other opponent, Curtis Jones, has already been forced to return the exact same type of contributions -- because they are illegal,” continued McClure. "She isn't going to community meetings, she isn't attending Council hearings, and she apparently isn't paying attention to the law. We need change and we need it now."
Matt McClure filed his finance report on Friday showing he has raised $164,000 from nearly five hundred legal donors. McClure lives in East Falls with his wife Kelly and two sons. He is running to bring an independent voice and ethical leadership to the 4th Councilmanic District and Philadelphia.
