MAYORAL CANDIDATE DWIGHT EVANS RECEIVES SUPPORT OF AFRICAN AMERICAN LAW ENFORCEMENT GROUPS

PHILADELPHIA --- Mayoral candidate Dwight Evans today proudly accepted the support of several African American law enforcement groups during a press conference at his campaign headquarters.  A number of supporters from the Philadelphia Guardian Civic League, Cops and Citizens for Justice, and the Sentinels of Law Enforcement were on hand to hear this special announcement.  Evans announced his candidacy for Mayor before more than 1,200 supporters on December 11th in North Philadelphia; his campaign slogan is “A Safer Philadelphia – Block by Block.”

“The first priority of any government must be to provide for the safety of its citizens, and government in Philadelphia is failing at this task,” Evans said.  “A key part of the equation in restoring the public’s safety is providing support to effective law enforcement in our communities.  For over 50 years, the Guardian Civic League has provided this support, and I am honored to receive their recommendation.”

The Guardian Civic League of Philadelphia, local chapter of the National Black Police Association, was founded in 1956 for the purpose of bringing together those members of the Philadelphia police department who were interested in civic betterment, through close cooperation between the police and the communities which they serve.  Since its inception, the League has spoken out on many important matters that affect the lives of all Philadelphians.  The League has also developed and implemented various programs throughout the City that are today benefiting both African Americans and impoverished Philadelphians.

“In over 27 years of public service, some of the accomplishments I am most proud of have been forged in partnership with those who serve in law enforcement,” Evans said. “The men and women of the Guardian Civic League, CCJ, and SOLE not only put their lives on the line every day in service of their fellow citizens, but they also go above and beyond the call of duty with their charity and community work.”

The event is the latest in a series of public endorsements and announcements of support that Evans will accept from organizations throughout the city that will be key partners in an Evans administration focused on restoring public safety in Philadelphia in order to rebuild communities where education, commerce and culture can thrive.  Evans has received the endorsement of UFCW Local 1776, TWU Local 234, Laborers Local 332, key members of the LGBT community, and the Black Clergy of Philadelphia.
