PHILADELPHIA --- Mayoral candidate Dwight Evans set the tone for the remaining 24 days of the Democratic mayoral primary today during a WPVI debate by drawing focus to the central issue in this race: each candidate’s record. By consistently asking each candidate to prove to the voters they have a record that matches their record, Evans has helped refocus the primary question of this election on what each candidate has done to deliver on their promises.
“I am pleased that we have reached a point in this critical race where we can finally have an open and honest discussion of each person’s record,” Evans stated. “Some of my opponents have spent several million dollars trying to convince Philadelphians they have a record. Others did not step up and lead on the critical issues facing Philadelphia when they were in elected office and had the opportunity to do something. I am proud of my record on leading crime reduction in my district, on leading the school reform effort, and on leading on job creation through the construction of the convention center and building new supermarkets in Philadelphia.”
Evans repeatedly questioned Tom Knox’s assertion that he has a record on fighting violence. Knox’s only apparent experience on crime fighting was circulating a petition to support a gun control bill that Dwight authored – after Knox decided to run for Mayor. Evans also questioned the “fuzzy math” of candidate Chaka Fattah’s airport lease scheme, stating that the issue of poverty reduction is too important to depend upon a plan built on a house of cards.
“We owe it to the voters of Philadelphia to have an honest dialogue about these critical issues and about each candidate’s track record,” Evans stated. “Discussing a candidate’s record is not a personal attack; it is, rather, our duty in giving the public a chance to make a fully informed decision in a mayoral race that is absolutely critical to our city’s future.”
