PHILADELPHIA: Today two of the city’s major labor unions announced their support for Matt McClure in the 4th Councilmanic District for the May 15th primary election.
McClure was proud to accept the endorsement of the Ironworkers Local Union 401, which represents over 1,000 members and families in the region. Local 401 represents the highly skilled craftsmen serving the many types of contractors in the union ironworking industry.
“Philadelphia needs change, and we know that Matt McClure can help deliver it,” said Joe Dougherty, Local 401’s Business Manager. “Our members want to see Philadelphia grow and prosper, and so does Matt, instead of continuing in the wrong direction we’re headed now.”
McClure also received the enthusiastic support of the Operating Engineers Stationary Local 835, which represents over 2,000 members and families in the region.
Local 835’s Business Manager, Mark Crosby, said, “Matt McClure represents the best opportunity in the Fourth Council District because he understands what needs to be done to build on our City’s economic strengths and how to address its weaknesses.”
“It is an honor to have the endorsement of organizations as prestigious and hard-working as local 401 and Local 835,” said McClure today.
“Philadelphia’s working men and women have been neglected too long, and I am running for office to fight for them, for a change. Our City needs to be a place where elected officials start looking at ideas and judge them by whether they will create jobs and help build our economy, instead of what’s in it for themselves.”
The endorsement by these unions is the latest sign of McClure’s growing momentum heading into the final weeks of the campaign. Since he began campaigning over a year ago, McClure has visited every neighborhood in the District, knocked on thousands of doors, and raised nearly 200,000 dollars from more than 300 donors.
McClure, a 4th generation Philadelphian, began his professional career working for the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, DC before returning to Philadelphia to work for then-Mayor Ed Rendell. He is currently an attorney at Ballard Spahr. He and his wife Kelly and their two children live in East Falls.
