Americans for Democratic Action Endorses Michael Nutter for Mayor

The Board of Directors of the Southeastern Chapter of Americans for Democratic Action (ADA),last night overwhelmingly endorsed Michael Nutter for Mayor. Citing Nutter's long record of commitment to progressive values and his 15-year history of leadership in enacting progressive legislation as a City Council member, ADA Chairperson, Jean Haskell described Nutter as "a candidate who has stood squarely for reform in the tradition of ADA's early leaders in municipal reform 50 years ago."

According to Haskell, Nutter's strong assets, in addition to his record in City Council, include his ability to see the big picture, to think beyond the narrow confines of how weve always done it, and his growing popularity with likely Democratic voters.

Nutter has moved from 4th to 2nd place in the past two weeks in a poll by GarinHartYang Research Group, a Washington, DC pollster. He now leads Chaka Fattah with 18% of the vote. The poll analysis reports that "Nutter has dramatically improved his profile{and his} standing among the critical undecided bloc is better than seven to one (positive to negative). This is a strong indication that he has considerable room to grow in the coming weeks." Nutter is a former Board member and treasurer of ADA, which hosted a mayoral candidates' forum on ethics reform in January at which Nutter clearly outperformed Tom Knox. ADA Board members expressed concern about Knox's lack of government experience, his ownership of a payday lending business, and his loans to his campaign which, if he wins, would likely lead to his raising money in the usual "pay to play" manner in order to pay himself back. ADA members were also concerned by his greatly overblown claims of "fixing" the city budget under former Mayor Rendell.
