DWIGHT EVANS PLEDGES FULL CITY SUPPORT FOR BIG BROTHERS/BIG SISTERS OF PHILADELPHIA

PHILADELPHIA --- Dwight Evans today announced his intention to fully support the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Philadelphia program when he is elected mayor. Specifically, Evans outlined how, as mayor, he would work to provide additional financial support to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, how he would encourage city workers to volunteer as mentors, and how he himself would become “Chief Big Brother” in Philadelphia. Evans announced for Mayor before more than 1,200 supporters on December 11th; his campaign slogan is “A Safer Philadelphia – Block by Block.”

“I fundamentally believe that we can overcome this scourge of violence Philadelphia is suffering through right now,” Evans said. “Community involvement and personal commitment will be keys to ending the violence, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters is a model combination of both these elements. As Mayor, I will provide the leadership necessary to make this mentoring program a central component in our successful fight against violence.”

Evans believes that there are four keys to reducing violence in Philadelphia: more effective law enforcement, a criminal justice system that is not just a revolving door, quality education and economic opportunities, and community as well as parental involvement. Today’s announcement focused on how important groups like Big Brothers/Big Sisters can play a critical role in that fourth “leg” of a safer Philadelphia. Dwight was joined by leaders of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and outlined how Philadelphia can help the over 1,400 children who are in immediate need of mentors.

“Each one of us can play a role in reducing violence,” Evans said. “Over 1,400 children and families have stepped up and asked for help. As Mayor, I will lead the city in answering their call.”
