PHILADELPHIA, PA - Mayoral Candidate Chaka Fattah today released his Women's Agenda, a policy to provide the women of Philadelphia with better healthcare, social reform, and economic opportunity.
"Women in Philadelphia deserve focus, support and targeted opportunity initiatives," Fattah said. "In my Administration, women will get the
necessary health and economic security they need to move forward."
The statistics show that the number of city government contracts won by women-owned businesses actually fell from 7.6 percent in 2005 to 6.2 percent in 2006. The Fattah Administration will prioritize increased involvement of women-owned businesses by setting a goal of increasing the percentage of contracts awarded to 15 percent by the end of Mayor Fattah's first term.
"Providing our expectant mothers the necessary tools to place our newest residents on a path to success is the foundation for transforming Philadelphia's future," Fattah said. "To date, not enough has been done to give these mother's the necessary opportunities to build a future for themselves and their new families."
Since 1990, Philadelphia has 25 percent fewer maternity care beds. The Fattah Administration will work to ensure that Philadelphia has adequate obstetric services and facilities. As mayor, Chaka Fattah will extend the Nurse-Family Partnership to every expectant mother in Philadelphia who needs it. In addition, more will be done regarding post-partum depression and to help new mothers with the adjustment process.
As mayor, Chaka Fattah will work to expand access to the Community Exchange Program. Through this program, the Fattah Administration will ensure that low-income mothers can provide their children with a positive and healthy foundation.
The Fattah Administration will also work with the courts to support the victims of domestic violence. Support and security of the victim will be
paramount throughout the entire criminal justice process.
