NEW DATA CONFIRMS NUTTER’S CALL FOR CRIME EMERGENCY

Philadelphia, February28, 2007— “How many more Philadelphians have to die,” demands mayoral candidate Michael Nutter. “We are leading the nation in
murders here in Philadelphia -- Philadelphia 60 – New York 51 and these are not sports numbers, but murder numbers. This is not a game that we want to win.”

“Philadelphia is in the midst of a crime wave that will lead us to exceed the 406 murders in 2006. New York, 51 murders – Philadelphia, 60 murders, New York, 8 million people, Philadelphia 1.5 million people, New York has 3 times the number of people as Philadelphia and yet we are outpacing them in our murder rate.”

In October 2006 when I called for the City to declare a crime emergency we were at 313 homicides, by the end of 2006 we had 406 homicides, and now in 2007 the last day of the second month, we are at 60 deaths. When is enough enough?” asked Nutter.

“If Mayor Street still thinks that we are in an “up tic” of murders or that someone else is to blame, then he is delusional and needs to resign,” stated Nutter. “Let someone assume the leadership of the city since the Mayor seems to be all but absent.”

In Tuesday’s Inquirer the headline was “Homicides surge past 2006 rate,” and in the Daily News today the headline is “Brotherly Love? It’s Murder City.” 60 murders in just two months -- an increase of 22% over last year. I called for a crime emergency last year, my crime plan ‘Safety Now,’ again states the need for a crime emergency. If Philadelphia is not in need of a crime emergency right now then I don’t know what crisis or how many more murders would constitute the need for a crime emergency.”

“Again I ask how many more Philadelphians have to die.”
