FATTAH STATEMENT ON KATZ REMARKS

Philadelphia, PA -- Congressman Chaka Fattah made the following statement based on remarks by former Republican Mayoral Candidate Sam Katz that his transportation plan was "racially divisive."

"The introduction of race into this campaign is wrong. I respect Sam Katz on a personal level, but his remarks were inappropriate. Rather than divide our city with cynicism, we should be joining together around positive ideas to ensure clean air, reduce congestion, and improve mass transit opportunities for all Philadelphians.

"Improving the region's mass transit system has nothing to do with race. President Bush offered $100 million to cities in his budget to examine congestion. I believe we should use that money to study the matter.

"The Fattah Transportation Plan lays out ways to move Philadelphia forward including upgrading transportation infrastructure, reducing the cost of car insurance, and working to resolve parking issues within the City of Philadelphia. If we are to achieve real opportunity for all Philadelphians, our minds must be open to new ideas."
