NUTTER LEADS DISCUSSION ON CRIME AT MAYORAL FORUM

Philadelphia, February 22, 2007— “I think the mayor of Philadelphia needs to stand up and call it for what it is – a crime emergency.” Michael Nutter led off his opening remarks at the Mayoral forum held tonight at St. Joseph’s University, by reiterating his call for ‘Safety Now.’ His plan to decrease violence was well received by the students in the audience, many of whom were wearing buttons with the number “406” on them to signify the number of murders last year in Philadelphia.

The tone of the crowd was receptive to Nutter’s views. As the only candidate who has already successfully put one hundred additional cops in the police academy, Michael Nutter impressed the audience as the candidate in this race who can make good on his promises.

Nutter believes that simply putting more people in uniform is not the answer. The cops need to be on the streets, in the communities that are in need. “We are not getting the on-the-streets presence that we should,” Nutter said. There is nowhere near the number of officers on the streets protecting us as there should be.”

All the candidates were asked to pledge not to seek re-election for Mayor if they did not cut the murder rate by 40%. Michael Nutter gave the most forthright response and was the only candidate to give an unqualified answer. He emphatically responded, “YES.”

Despite the somber subject matter of the forum, Nutter managed to inject his humorous style to the debate. Sabrina Caputo, a student at St. Joseph’s University, said, “He had a sense of comedic relief. He is very personable – very approachable.”
