PHILADELPHIA – Tom Knox’s mayoral campaign has opened a corporate account at Philly CarShare, an innovative non-profit program that offers a fleet of cars, including 60% hybrid vehicles, to members to be used on an as-needed basis. The cars are parked in central locations.
The City of Philadelphia joined Philly CarShare in 2004, becoming the first government worldwide to share cars with local residents in a major fleet reduction effort. The pioneering project has helped eliminate over 330 municipal vehicles, saving Philadelphia taxpayers $2 million annually.
The group’s stated goal: “To maximize the economic, environmental, and social benefits of reduced automobile dependence in the Philadelphia region” through its program.
“We got a call from Philly CarShare telling us we were the first campaign to sign on. It’s a great program,” said Josh Morrow, Knox for Philly campaign manager. “This is exactly the kind of innovative solution Tom wants to support.” He said a staffer who was already a Philly CarShare member proposed the idea after someone needed a ride to a distant event.
All plans include free gas, premium insurance and 24-hour road assistance. For more information, see www.phillycarshare.org.
