The Nutter Plan for Sustainability Now: America's "Greenest" City - Philadelphia
Philadelphia, February 15, 2007-- Clean water is the lifeblood of prosperous cities and Philadelphians built the first water system in America to deliver clean water throughout an entire city. Mayoral candidate Michael Nutter’s sustainability plan follows that bold example by rising to the environmental challenges of today.
Nutter’s plan outlines a city government that is capable of embracing dozens of smart proposals on environmental issues and committed to setting goals that makes Philadelphia one of the greenest cities in the country.
“I believe that we can have the best of both worlds: green is the color of the environment and the color of money, said Nutter. “Using the knowledge that we have gained from the environment we can protect our future and increase our prosperity.”
Following are a few of the main points of the plan:
“As a councilman I was very committed to improving the quality of life for all Philadelphians and I will continue that effort as mayor,” said Nutter. “Sustainability issues are essential to the city’s future and we need to address them with pragmatic, forward-thinking ideas.”
This setting illustrates the important features of Sustainability as a policy issue: the understanding of how natural and human systems interact, the importance of acting with the future in mind, and the many kinds of benefits—economic, environmental, and social—that can accrue when we commit to a Sustainability Policy.
