NUTTER CALLS SHELVED CAMPAIGN FINANCE BILL A VICTORY FOR PHILADELPHIA

Philadelphia, February 14, 2007— “This is such an incredible victory for the people of Philadelphia,” said mayoral candidate Michael Nutter. “Councilman Kenney and I have been friends for a number of years and I’m happy to know that he finally saw the light and decided to let this issue go until after the primary. Of course, after the primary I’ll still oppose any changes to the current campaign finance limits,” continued Nutter with a smile.

Councilman Kenney introduced a bill to change the current campaign finance limits two weeks ago, citing an even playing field for all candidates as justification for repealing the limits entirely. A strong backlash from the public and some politicians – with Nutter in the lead – forced the Councilman to rethink his position as he was set to propose a watered down version of the bill. Yesterday he decided to shelf the bill entirely and revisit the issue after the primary in May.

“I am overwhelmed by the support that we received from the public, those who signed our web based petition (over 1500), watchdog groups, and other officials,” said Nutter. “As a councilman, I fought long and hard, along with many others to move Philadelphia beyond the pay-to-play mentality. The Board of Ethics and the campaign finance limits are just the beginning of what is still left to be done.”

Nutter who was set to testify before the Committee of Law and Government today said, “With the shelving of this bill, Philadelphians can now take a breath and move on to other issues, knowing that we have at least one victory in the bag.”
