Today Mat McClure, a candidate for City Council from the 4th District, released the following statement:
“I enthusiastically endorse each and every one of the Committee of Seventy's City Council ethics agenda points, and I look forward to spearheading the cause and introducing the required legislation in January 2008. I commend Seventy for their thoughtful advocacy of these important issues."
"In accordance with the first principal on their list, I continue to be oppose efforts in City Council to loosen campaign finance restrictions in the Mayoral election. While I can understand the concern some have over the potential for millionaires to “buy” an office, we can not use this as justification to set back the clock on campaign finance reform.”
“In a time when our city needs, and its people deserve, real change and thoughtful leadership, it is simply wrong to set the campaign finance limits so high they become irrelevant, in order to protect the status quo. That’s what the proposed changes to the amendment would do."
