Tom Knox makes rounds in N.E. Philadelphia this week

Discussions span all ages as candidate listens to citizen concerns

PHILADELPHIA –  Mayoral candidate Tom Knox met with Northeast residents this Wednesday to introduce himself and hear their concerns, but first took a brief break from campaigning to speak to a group of Northeast High seniors on leadership and fiscal responsibility, highlighting the importance of getting a high school education.

Knox earned his General Education Diploma (GED) while serving in the United States Navy and went on to become a successful business owner while developing a reputation as a tough negotiator and business turnaround specialist.  The students asked Knox about his successful business ventures and wanted to know what it was like working with former Mayor Ed Rendell on balancing the city’s budget.

At Deer Meadows Retirement Community in Pennypack, Knox was back in running mode. He greeted residents who expressed concern with the direction in which the city is headed. Working his way through a crowd of nearly 50 residents, Knox listened to their questions about cuts to programs for the growing senior citizen population.  “The money is there - we just need someone who can manage the city’s budget and restore accountability,” he told them.

Then it was off to the Jewish Community Center’s Kline Branch in Somerton, where the candidate spoke to nearly 120 seniors about topics ranging from crime and education to the closure of recreation centers. “We shouldn’t be closing 47 recreation centers in Philadelphia. We should be opening them,” he said.

Knox also spoke about his proposals to lower the city’s crime rate and educate tomorrow’s workforce , taking questions from the audience before leaving for a mayoral forum in another part of the city.
