MAYORAL CANDIDATE DWIGHT EVANS STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT’S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

Who will speak for America’s cities?

“For six long years, Philadelphians have endured an Administration in Washington, DC that has either ignored or denigrated the needs of America’s cities. The Bush Administration’s economic, education and foreign policies have only resulted in a growing disparity between the wealthy and those trapped in poverty. These results have manifested most acutely in our nation’s cities, and Philadelphia is no exception. One in four Philadelphians live in poverty, our schools remain underfunded, and desperately needed federal resources continue to be diverted to support an ill-conceived and poorly executed Iraq war.

I am disappointed that there seems to be no relief in sight from this Administration. Philadelphia needs federal resources to make our neighborhoods safe, modernize our schools, and lift people out of poverty. Under President Bill Clinton, cities like Philadelphia benefited from programs such as the “100,000 police officers” program. Such initiatives should be replicated, not just fondly remembered. Philadelphia should be recognized as the regional treasure and economic engine that it is, not merely as an afterthought in our federal government’s misplaced priorities. As Mayor of Philadelphia, I will work with our federal delegation to make sure that Philadelphia finally gets our fair share of federal resources and is no longer forgotten.”
