MAYORAL CANDIDATE DWIGHT EVANS RECEIVES ENDORSEMENT OF LOCAL 332

PHILADELPHIA --- Mayoral candidate Dwight Evans today accepted the endorsement of the Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 332 during a rally at the Union’s headquarters before a crowd of supporters. Evans announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination on December 11th before a crowd of more than 1,200 people; his campaign slogan is “A Safer Philadelphia – Block by Block.”

“The first priority of any government must be to provide for the safety of its citizens, and government in Philadelphia is failing at this task,” Evans said. “A key part of the equation in restoring the public’s safety is providing quality jobs and employment opportunities to our residents. For over 70 years, Local 332 has provided these opportunities to countless Philadelphians, and I am honored to receive their endorsement.”

Laborer's International Union of North America Local 332 was chartered in 1932 by Harry Murry. Local 332 has 3,000 members and is a part of the Laborers District Council of the Metropolitan Area of Philadelphia and Vicinity.

“Dwight Evans is the most qualified candidate – announced or unannounced – running for mayor of the City of Philadelphia,” said Sam Staten, Jr., Assistant Business Manager and President of Laborers' Local 332. “Evans has a proven track record in Philadelphia and in Harrisburg and is committed to turning this city around. He is a man of his word. He has a plan for job creation, crime reduction, and community improvement. These are issues shared by the 3,000 members of our local. For those reasons, Local 332 has committed to supporting his candidacy.”

“In over 27 years of public service, some of the accomplishments I am most proud of have been forged in partnership with the men and women of Local 332,” Evans said. “From leading the charge on the creation of the Pennsylvania Convention Center to providing support to Philadelphia’s new stadiums, I have been proud to fight for a better Philadelphia with the members of Local 332 at my side.”

The event is the latest in a series of public endorsements Evans will accept from organizations throughout the city that will be key partners in an Evans administration focused on restoring public safety in Philadelphia in order to rebuild communities where education, commerce and culture can thrive.

“Local 332 has a tradition of having a profound and significant Election Day operation, and we plan to have no less for Dwight Evans on May 15, 2007,” stated Staten.
