FATTAH CALLS FOR NEW ERA OF GRASSROOTS CITY GOVERNMENT

Mayoral Candidate offers New Ethics Plan to Ensure Integrity in City Hall and Create Opportunities for Philadelphians

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Mayoral Candidate Chaka Fattah today announced his plans for an open, honest, and accountable city government. At a press conference at the Ethical Society in Center City, Fattah spoke of an end of pay-to play and a new era of responsive city government.

“In order for a government to effectively work for its residents, it must be open and accountable,” said Congressman Fattah. “In this city, we will forge a purpose-driven government focused on expanding opportunity for all Philadelphians.”

Fattah’s plan is multifaceted. He calls for a more open government that includes a strong Inspector General, enhanced disclosure of the Mayor’s campaign finances, and an end to pay to play. However, Fattah goes even further with his plan and also lays out a real vision for a grassroots city government.

Mayoral Candidate Fattah seeks to maximize citizen participation in city government. This includes conducting city business from a different Councilmanic District once a week and holding open meetings between the Mayor and citizens.

“In a Fattah Administration, we would bring City Hall out of the offices and into the neighborhoods,” said Congressman Fattah. “Once a week, I will come to a separate part of the city and meet with residents on their concerns. Ten weeks later, I will be back to see the progress.”

Congressman Fattah also offered up plans for a more technologically advanced city government, which includes creating a 311 information line on government services and making more city documents available and easily accessible.

“The goal here is for all Philadelphians to feel that have a stake in the city and that they can trust the government again,” said Fattah.
