MEDIA ADVISORY

 NUTTER PROPOSES CAMPAIGN DEBATE SERIES

WHO:             Mayoral Candidate Michael Nutter

WHAT:           Campaign Debate Series

WHEN:           Wednesday, December 20, 2006       1:30 p.m.

WHERE:         Nutter Campaign Headquarters

                        42 S. 15th Street, (on the corner of 15th & Chestnut) Room 625

WHY:              Mayoral Candidate Michael Nutter proposes the creation of a Road to City Hall: Campaign 2007 public debate series for the upcoming Mayoral, City Council and row office elections in an effort to promote issues-based campaigns in Philadelphia.

“I believe that now is the time to pull everyone together to create a series of debates in the new year that will allow the people an opportunity to get to know their candidates,” said Nutter.  “The debates should cover a wide spectrum of topics including education, crime, housing, economic development and other pertinent issues.

Nutter’s proposal includes reaching out to a number of different organizations to oversee the debates, organizations such as the Committee of Seventy, League of Women Voters, Asian Americans United, the NAACP and others.

In Nutter’s proposal the media would also play an important role.  “If the media comes on board, the debates can be broadcast through television or radio and reach even more people,” said Nutter.

“I imagine that most of these organizations are already thinking of organizing debates for the candidates next year.  I’m proposing that we take it one step further than what we have done in past election years.  If we can put together a partnership that include the civic organizations, the media and a variety of venues, then the citizens of Philadelphia are the real winners in this election,” stated Nutter.
