Evans Announces $100,000 Grant to Alex’s Lemonade Stand During Ceremony at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, October 25th – State Representative Dwight Evans today joined Jay and Liz Scott, parents of the late Alexandra Scott, as well as a host of other special guests in announcing a $100,000 state grant to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation during a ceremony at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is a unique foundation that has evolved from a young cancer patient's front yard lemonade stand to a nationwide fundraising movement for childhood cancer. “Alex Scott’s courage, determination and vision have been an inspiration to a countless number of people throughout the nation,” stated Representative Evans. “Her life has shown yet again that one person can indeed make a difference, and I am proud to help in this critical battle against childhood cancer.”
Alex's Lemonade Stand was founded by a young cancer patient, Alexandra "Alex" Scott. For four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses and organizations, all to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. As of today, her national campaign has raised over 9 million dollars for pediatric cancer research. “It is truly awesome to think that Alex’s front yard stand has inspired thousands to join in the fight against childhood cancer ” stated Jay Scott. “We are extremely grateful to Representative Evans for his commitment to helping children with cancer through this generous state grant to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.”
The ceremony was held in the Colket Atrium at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Children’s Hospital was founded in 1855 as the nation's first pediatric hospital. Through its long-standing commitment to providing exceptional patient care, training new generations of pediatric healthcare professionals and pioneering major research initiatives, Children's Hospital has fostered many discoveries that have benefited children worldwide. Its pediatric research program is among the largest in the country, ranking second in National Institutes of Health funding. In addition, its unique family-centered care and public service programs have brought the 430-bed hospital recognition as a leading advocate for children and adolescents. “Alex Scott’s legacy lives on through support The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia receives for pediatric cancer research from the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation,” says Steven M. Altschuler, M.D. Children’s Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer. “The oncology program at Children’s Hospital provides cutting-edge research and treatment with the goal that one day, all children with cancer can be cured.”###
