Michael A. Nutter Disagrees with Recent National Park Service
Recommendation to Build a Fence Around Independence Square
Philadelphia – Mayoral candidate Michael A. Nutter publicly announced his disagreement with the recent National Park Service’s recommendation to build a 7-foot fence around Independence Square, the area behind Independence Hall.
“We cannot be free if we restrict our citizens from their most important symbols of freedom,” Nutter commented.
“I do not believe the proposed 7-foot iron fence will deter terrorists and more importantly, protect citizens against an act of terrorism. Therefore, I am strongly opposed to building the proposed fence which would restrict access to one of the most important buildings in the City, if not the Country.”
Nutter submitted his comments to the National Parks Service, during a public comment period. The Parks Service released a July 2006 report, recommending a 7-foot fence and increased screening facilities, citing Department of Homeland Security Directives.
“I believe there are other publicly suggested proposals that should be reviewed to see if the important goals of safety can be attained without forgoing the integrity of what Independence Square symbolizes,” Nutter added.
