Community Network Member: Congreso

Congreso Logo

Congreso is a nationally recognized, community based non-profit organization that primarily serves the neighborhoods of Eastern North Philadelphia where the majority of the city's Latino population resides.

This area is a culturally vibrant community challenged by issues of poverty, access to health care, low educational attainment and unemployment. Founded in 1977 as a grassroots organization providing health services to the region's Puerto Rican community, Congreso has responded to the community's changing demographics and evolving needs for more than 30 years by growing into a multifaceted, comprehensive provider of human services.

Congreso's mission is to strengthen Latino communities through social, economic, education, and health services; leadership development; and advocacy.

Additional Information

Congreso Civic Engagement Update

From the February edition of A Civic Engagement Update for the Pennsylvania Latino Community:

This edition of the Congreso Civic Engagement Update focuses on the important discussion of immigration and how the national debate has affected Latinos in the last year and will continue to do so without effective, federal legislation.

On a local level, we are excited to support the voices of the Latino community by providing venues through which our opinions are expressed and heard. We are hosting a 2007 Election Event with the community, as a way to take our voices to the candidates and to be more effective in casting our votes this election year.
