Job: State representative
So far in the race: Evans has stuck to his philosophy that to fight crime the city must also create new jobs and improve its schools -- a philosophy that he developed in the Blueprint for a Safer Philadelphia and implemented in his West Oak Lane neighborhood. Evans illustrated the idea with a high-concept ad that ended with the tag line "Do Something" and launched a "Do Something" whistle-stop tour across the city. Still, Evans' poll numbers have not moved much at all through the primary season, and were low in the final poll of the campaign. Evans took the lead in attacking Tom Knox's background and record - though he joined with Knox in challenging Bob Brady's position on the ballot. He has been endorsed by several unions, by several state and local elected officials and by the Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity. Gov. Ed Rendell has said Evans is probably best qualified for the job of mayor.
Campaign cash on hand: Evans raised a total of $3,291,782 for his mayoral campaign, including $1,426,899 in the first three months of this year. As of April 30, Evans $542,825 left to spend
Marital status: Single
Bragging rights: A powerful force in city and state politics, Evans has represented the West Oak Lane area in Harrisburg since 1980. He serves as the Democratic chair of the House Appropriations Committee. He's known for economic revival of Ogontz Avenue, legislative work on SEPTA and the Convention Center, and reforms in areas like crime and education.
Downsides: His 1999 bid for mayor was badly managed, and he finished last in a five-person field. He's worked closely with state House leader John Perzel and has supported state Republican takeover of the Convention Center.
Friends and enemies: Supported by Northwest Philadelphia Democrats including Councilwoman Marian Tasco and NAACP president J. Whyatt Mondesire; estranged from Mayor Street.
