COMPLETE CONTEST RULESIf you've ever played an NCAA Basketball Tournament Pool, playing "Gary Thompson's Summer Movie Madness" should be a snap.Gary has picked 32 movies that are likely to be among the biggest box office hits of the summer. They've been seeded 1-8 in four different areas, roughly corresponding to their release dates. All you need to do to enter is fill out a bracket and watch the box office charts all summer long. How do you play: In the first round, you'll see 16 pairs of movies, eight pairs on each side of the bracket. Pick the movie from each pair which you believe will have the bigger Friday-to-Sunday opening weekend (if a movie opens on Wednesday or Thursday, only Friday-Sunday results will count). The 16 movies you've chosen as first round winners will now be paired off in the second round. Pick the movie you believe will have the bigger Friday-Sunday SECOND weekend. Now you've got 8 movies left which will be paired off for the third round. Pick the movie you believe will have the bigger Friday-Sunday THIRD weekend. That takes you to the Final Four. If our seeding is accurate, the Final Four will be "Mission: Impossible III," "The Da Vinci Code," "Superman Returns" and "Pirates of the Caribbean," but what do we know. When we seeded the summer movies the only one we had seen was "M:I3," and how tired people are of Tom Cruise is anyone's guess. Your final four movies may be different from ours. At any rate, for the Final Four, pick the movie you believe will have the bigger Friday-Sunday FOURTH weekend. You've now got two finalists. Pick the movie you believe will have the bigger Friday-Sunday FIFTH weekend to determine the movie you believe will be crowned this summer's box office champion. Then don't forget to answer the tie-breaker questions and make sure your e-mail address is accurate. There is only one entry allowed per e-mail address. How do you win: You will receive 1 point for every first round contest you pick correctly, 2 points for every second round contest, 4 points for every third round contest, 8 points for every fourth round contest and 16 points if you pick the box office champ. The entrant with the most points when all the contests are decided will win First Prize. In case of a tie, tie-breaker #1 will be used to break the tie. If there is still a tie, tie-breaker #2 will be used to break the tie. If there is still a tie, tie-breaker #3 will be used to break the tie. If there is still a tie, a blindfolded Gary Thompson will pick the name of one of the tied entrants out of a hat. If a summer movie gets pulled from the release schedule, it will count as a forfeit - hope you picked the other movie. First Prize: A trip for two to Los Angeles to attend the premiere of major Hollywood movie this fall. Second Prize: "The Gary Thompson Collection." Daily News movie critic Gary Thompson hand-picks his 32 favorite DVDs. (Sponsored by TLA Video.) Third Prize: A gift bag of summer movie goodies, including T-shirts, soundtrack CDs, DVDs and more. (10 third prizes will be awarded.) Deadline: You must completely fill out your brackets and submit by NOON (EST) on May 5, 2006. Official box office results will be posted to the contest Web site every Tuesday so you can track your progress throughout the summer. In August, we will post to the site when the winners will be announced, as the late summer films drop out of the competition. Winners will be announced at some point between the end of August and Tuesday Sept. 26. |
